Bai Ji Guan - 2019 Zheng Yan Wuyi Oolong Loose Leaf Tea
Bai Ji Guan, or White Cockscomb, is one of the Four Famous Wuyi Oolongs. Even so, it is grown in much smaller quantities now than in the past and is now fairly uncommon. The small, family owned and run farm from which we sourced our tea is located in the Dahongpao Scenic Area, a national reserve that contains the original rock tea trees of Wuyi, China. The family has owned the farm for several generations. The tea is harvested and processed by hand.
This Bai Ji Guan oolong tea was harvested in 2019 from the San Yang peak of the Wuyi Mountain. The leaves were twisted, dried and lightly roasted two times over lychee charcoal in the baijiguan style. Lychee charcoal produces no smoke and adds no flavor. The roasting enhances the flavor and is a very time consuming and difficult process.
Rumored to have received its name from a monk to memorialize a courageous rooster that gave his life to protect his baby from an eagle. The tea is floral with an aftertaste that lingers for several minutes.
Our 2019 Zheng Yan Bai Ji Guan oolong rock tea will give strong, clear brews for at least 8 steeps, up to 15.
