Ban Tian Yao - 2016 Zheng Yan Wuyi Oolong Loose Leaf Tea
Our 2016 Zheng Yan Ban Tian Yao Oolong Tea comes from a small, family owned tea garden in the mountains of Wuyi. Called a yancha, or rock tea, because the tea trees grow in the shallow soil atop rock with high mineral content inside the protected Dahongpao Scenic Area. The water which flows down the mountain to the trees bring even more minerals. This concentration of minerals give the teas grown there an amazing and unique flavor. Zheng yan teas are the most highly prized rock teas. Ban Tian Yao is one of the most famous Wuyi rock teas but is not widely grown. This tea is very scarce and precious.
Harvested on May 5th, 2016, this loose leaf rock tea was processed completely by hand except for sorting. It has been medium roasted over lychee charcoal to create still another layer in this already very complex tea. Lychee charcoal produces no smoke and adds no flavor. The final roasting occurred on October 23, 2017.
A perfectly balanced, deep and mellow floral, fruit, sugarcane, smoke, and mineral flavor with a long lasting aftertaste. A firm but not overpowering oolong flavor. A true masterpiece.
Our 2016 Zheng Yan Ban Tian Yao Oolong Rock Tea will give strong, clear brews for at least 8 steeps, 15 steeps is normal. The flavor stays very, but not completely, consistent through all infusions.
