Premium loose leaf Lichee Congou Black Tea is malty and sweet and infused with the flavor of lichee (or lychee) fruit producing a delightful, naturally scented tea.
Heavily forested and mountainous, Fujian Province has been the birthplace of many of China's teas including Congou black tea. Once the most expensive tea exported to the west, only combinations of one bud and one leaf are picked by hand. The picked tea is then sorted by grade and processed.
Leaves are dried at low temperature until only a small amount of moisture remains. They are then rolled into strips and allowed to oxidize for five to six hours. During this time, temperature and humidity are carefully controlled. This oxidation changes the color of the leaves
from green to reddish-brown. To stop the oxidation, the leaves are baked for about six hours. After cooling, the tea is ready for consumption or packaging.
Once reserved for the emperor, lichee is a tropical fruit native to Fujian Province. Very high in vitamin C, the fruit has a delicate, sweet, slightly transparent white pulp and a floral scent. Lichee trees can grow to about 90 feet tall and produce thousands of two inch long fruits.
