Qi Lan - 2017 Ban Yan Wuyi Oolong Loose Leaf Tea
Our 2017 Ban Yan
Qi Lan (Qilan) Oolong Tea, or Rare Orchid, comes from a small, family owned tea garden in the mountains of Wuyi. Ban yan teas grow around the edge of the zheng yan area and are called half-rock teas. Ban yan teas have very similar flavors and aromas to zheng yan teas but the different micro-climate does have an affect. The tea trees are grown in the shallow soil atop rock with high mineral content. Water flowing down the mountain to the trees brings even more minerals giving these teas an amazing and unique flavor. The space inside the zheng yan area is very limited and necessitates the growing of some trees be done outside of it.
Harvested on May 5th, 2017, this loose leaf Qi Lan oolong tea was processed completely by hand except for sorting. It was lightly roasted one time over lychee charcoal on June 5, 2017 and once again in January, 2018. Lychee charcoal produces no smoke and adds no flavor.
Releases an exquisite underlying aroma of orchid when brewed.
