Premium Loose Leaf Young Pu-Erh Tea
Young Pu-erh has been aged for one year in a dark cave in Yunnan Province. Elemental character of the tea has not been mellowed by a long aging process. As with wine, young pu-erh is considered the least valuable whereas pu-erh 5 years or older is more highly prized. However, the flavor of young pu-erh tea is unique and memorable and should be enjoyed.
The method of production is very involved. The tealeaves are picked, rolled, withered in the hot sun, after which they are steamed and pressed into cakes. The steaming process generates some moisture and is compressed (without drying) into the cakes. While the cakes dry, the tea takes on an earthy character. The pu-erh is then stored for a time and allowed to ripen. Tea must age for 6 months to be called pu-erh. This p’uerh is broken up out of the cakes to make it easier to deal with as a loose leaf tea.
